FALL 2012
CUS, NJLA and ACRL – Perfect Together!
By Denise O’Shea The College and University Section (CUS) of the New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) was founded in 1948. Four years later its members voted to become one of the first state chapters of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Unfortunately, the New Jersey Chapter did not continue their ACRL affiliation and allowed the membership to lapse. The NJLA CUS finally renewed their membership as the New Jersey Chapter of ACRL in 1979.
Today the CUS is a joint chapter with both ACRL and NJLA and we enjoy the benefits of being affiliated with 2 great organizations. Both organizations provide us with funding. We use that funding for programs and to provide a limited amount of support to library school students that want to attend our programs. ACRL also offers support for continuing education by providing each chapter with complimentary access to some of their eLearning webcasts. The NJ Chapter has just scheduled one of these webcasts for April 30th, 2013. The title of that webcast is “Embedded Librarians: Integrating Information Literacy Instruction at the Point of Need”. Please save the date. Details about the webcast will be announced early in 2013. If you are interested in participating in a panel discussion on embedded librarians please contact me, your chapter president.
Besides funding and support for continuing education ACRL also offers a newsletter (Chapter Topics), a blog (http://acrl.ala.org/acrlchapters/), a listserv, a social media presence, and a speakers program. Chapter leaders meet twice a year at the ALA Annual and Midwinter conferences to share information and ideas. Some of the initiatives that ACRL National is currently working on include a mentoring program and a toolkit for new leaders. One of our NJLA CUS / ACRL-NJ Past-Presidents, Trevor Dawes, is the current ACRL National Vice-President/President-Elect. Trevor makes sure that we are aware of everything going on at the national level.
Information regarding ACRL Chapter policies, procedures, roles and responsibilities can be found here: http://www.ala.org/acrl/resources/policies/chapter5
According to these policies, each ACRL chapter is responsible either for incorporating itself or belonging to a state association that is incorporated. Existing ACRL chapters were required to incorporate or belong to a state association that is incorporated by the end of the year 2000.
The College and University Section is not incorporated as an organization (i.e., we do not have 501c3 status). Instead, we are affiliated with an incorporated state library association – the New Jersey Library Association. Thanks to our relationship with NJLA we have access to web tools such as the NJLA Wiki, the blog, and the Drupal CMS that runs our website (http://cus.njla.org/); we also have our local listserv, and access to the NJLA office and the very helpful staff that run it – Sue Rice and Pat Tumulty. One of the biggest benefits of being affiliated with NJLA is that we are able to participate in an annual conference of New Jersey librarians which provides us with many opportunities to collaborate with librarians from all types of libraries.
The 2013 Annual NJLA Conference is scheduled to take place from June 3 – 5 at the Revel Hotel in Atlantic City. This year’s theme is “Finding the Perfect Fit”. The various committees of the NJLA CUS / ACRL-NJ Chapter are busy putting together an exciting roster of programs and speakers for the conference and we look forward to sharing more information with you about the conference soon.
Happy Holidays! Denise O’Shea President, NJLA CUS / ACRL-NJ

Creating and Boosting Academic Profiles with Google Scholar Citations and Microsoft Academic Search
By Judit Ward Since its inception, a small research library at Rutgers University, the Center of Alcohol Studies Library, has had the privilege to provide far-reaching services to its core users, the Center’s faculty. Recent developments in the efforts to increase scholars’ visibility in the academic community, such as Google Scholar Citations (http://scholar.google.com/citations) and Microsoft Academic Search (http://academic.research.microsoft.com), prompted the Library to take up a new task and offer assistance in creating, maintaining, and improving researchers’ profiles online. Montclair State University Hosts Sirsi Northeast Regional Group (SNRG) 2012 Conference
By Mary Mallery
The Sirsi Northeast Regional Group (SNRG) 2012 Conference was held at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey, from June 10th through 12th. This SNRG gathering began in June 2004 at Bucknell University as an annual conference to share library applications, policies, and procedures for institutions using the SirsiDynix integrated library system and has grown into a three-day event hosted at different college campuses each year and focusing on technology innovation in libraries and pedagogy as well as library systems. Since then, librarians and staff travel from locations ranging from Canada to North Carolina each year to this three-day conference hosted in previous years by Franklin and Marshall College, Pennsylvania State University, Lehigh University and Mount Allison in Canada, respectively.
This year, 65 librarians attended the SNRG Conference from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York State. Neil Baldwin, Director of The Creative Research Center at Montclair State University, presented the keynote address at the SNRG 2012 Conference on Monday, June 11th, entitled "The Creative Research Center: An Exclusive Guided Tour Through a New Virtual Transdisciplinary Community."
Here are some highlights from the SNRG Conference sessions:
* Berit Nelson from Sirsi presented on the new E-Resource Central product;
* Ken Bonney of SirsiDynix gave individual training sessions throughout both days of the conference;
* Jianrong Wang of Richard Stockton College of New Jersey presented "Towards OPAC Assessment to Smooth Students’ Discovery Journey: A Usability Study;"
* Denise O'Shea of Montclair State University presented on "Social Media in Libraries,"
* Christopher Sterback from Rutgers University presented on "An Introduction to LDAP,"
* Kathleen Hughes of Montclair State University presented "Getting a Handle on LibGuides;"
* Trish Notartomas from Penn State University Libraries presented on the PSU "Floating Collections Program," and
* Guy Dobson of Drew University Library presented on "Why I Love API."
There were Round Table Discussions on Circulation, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Reports run by MSU librarians; a Systems Round Table run by Guy Dobson of Drew University, a Serials Round Table run by Gracemary Smulewitz of Rutgers University, and a Public Libraries Round Table run by Eileen Palmer of LMxAC.
On Monday, June 11th, in the evening a group of approximately 25 librarians carpooled for a Tour of Drew University Methodist Library and Archives and the Drew University Rose Library featuring the new Thomas H. Kean Reading Room & Gallery.
It was our pleasure at Montclair State University to host such a lively and engaged group of librarians. To view the complete SNRG 2012 Conference Program Schedule and Powerpoint Presentations, please visit the SNRG 2012 Conference Guide online at: http://montclair.libguides.com/snrg2012

NJLA CUS/NJ ACRL Chapter Job Shadowing Program
By Zara Wilkinson
Would you like to support current MLIS students who are looking to explore academic librarianship as a prospective career path? If so, please consider participating in the NJLA CUS/NJ ACRL Job Shadowing Program.
The Job Shadowing Program connects current students with library professionals at colleges and universities throughout New Jersey. By spending a few hours observing an academic librarian, students have the opportunity to connect the skills they learn in the classroom with the skills they will use in the workplace. These students can gain insight into “real life” librarianship, widen their professional network, and meet working professionals in their areas of interest.
In the past, these invaluable job shadowing opportunities were made available only to MLIS students at Rutgers University, home to New Jersey’s only ALA-accredited LIS program. This year, for the first time, we are extending the Job Shadowing Program to include students enrolled in LIS programs in New York and Pennsylvania. Because of their proximity, students at these programs, who may already be living or working in New Jersey, are invited and encouraged to become familiar with New Jersey’s excellent academic libraries.
Currently almost forty librarians from academic librarians in New Jersey have volunteered their time. If you would like to be added to the list of participating librarians that will be distributed to interested LIS students, please contact Zara Wilkinson at zara.wilkinson@camden.rutgers.edu.
Zara Wilkinson is a reference librarian at Rutgers University.
