Bibliographic Control and Metadata Committee (BCMC)

Mission Statement:

Following the ACRL mission in advancing the quality of academic library services, the Bibliographic Control and Metadata Committee shares and explores common and challenging issues faced by the technical services cataloging/metadata librarians in the academic and research libraries in the state of New Jersey. To achieve this mission, the Committee has the following goals:

  • To share information and explore challenging issues in cataloging/metadata, bibliographic control, authority control, database management and staff training
  • To provide technical and moral support to members within its ability in the field of cataloging/bibliographic control
  • To provide members with opportunities in continuing education and professional development
  • To promote innovative ideas and effective measures for quality control of bibliographic and authority data
  • To foster cooperative efforts in resource sharing among academic libraries in the field of cataloging/metadata and bibliographic control ​

Weird, Wild, and Wonderful: Special Collections Cataloging

This workshop is intended for catalogers who have little or no experience with rare and unique materials, but who nonetheless find themselves faced with a rare or unique collection or item to catalog. Presenters will share general principles, best practices, and tips for cataloging and processing both single items and collections. Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of their most daunting items awaiting cataloging.
